A Deeper Look at Sapphire Durability
Blue Sapphire Color Stability and Brilliance Over Time

Blue sapphires are among the most stable gemstones used in fine jewelry and do not fade with normal wear and care. Natural sapphires, especially those that are untreated or traditionally heat treated, maintain their color and brilliance indefinitely. They are resistant to light exposure, heat, and everyday environmental conditions, which is why blue sapphires have been valued for centuries and are well suited for daily wear.
In rare cases, color changes can occur in lower-quality or artificially treated stones. Certain diffusion or irradiation treatments may not produce fully stable results and, over time, can affect a sapphire's appearance. These enhancement methods are not widely accepted within fine jewelry. At MySapphireSource, we offer only untreated or traditionally heat-treated blue sapphires selected specifically for long-term beauty, durability, and color stability.
It is also important to distinguish true color stability from temporary surface dullness caused by everyday use. Blue sapphires do not become cloudy on their own, but buildup from lotions, soap, or hard water can reduce surface brilliance. This is not a sign of fading or damage and is easily corrected. Gentle cleaning with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush will restore the sapphire's natural brightness, allowing it to look just as beautiful years from now as it did when first worn.
