A Rainbow of Sapphire Colors
Sapphires are best known for their classic blue color, but this remarkable gemstone occurs naturally in an impressive range of hues. Pink, yellow, orange, green and purple sapphires are collectively known as fancy sapphires, and combining several colors can create a beautiful rainbow effect.
Our sapphire pendant collection showcases this exceptional variety. Along with timeless blue sapphire pendants, you’ll find elegant pink and yellow sapphires as well as colorful designs featuring sapphires arranged across the spectrum of the rainbow.
For centuries, sapphires have been treasured for both their beauty and symbolism. Sri Lanka, historically known as Ceylon, has been an important source of fine sapphires for generations and remains especially renowned for stones with attractive color and brilliance. Kashmir became legendary for its extraordinary blue sapphires following discoveries there in the late 1800s, although significant production was relatively short-lived. Madagascar later emerged as another important source of fine sapphire, particularly beginning in the 1990s.
Sapphires are also found in locations including Montana, Australia, Thailand and Cambodia, with each source producing stones with its own characteristic range of colors and qualities.
Beautiful, durable and available in far more colors than many people realize, sapphire is also the September birthstone and is traditionally associated with the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.
Enhancements
Once a sapphire is mined from the Earth, it is first cut into a shape that will best showcase the beauty of the stone. Nearly all sapphires are also heat treated to improve the clarity and sometimes enhance the color of the stones. Heat treatment is permanent and a standard acceptable practice in the fine jewelry industry. Less than 1% of sapphires used in jewelry are actually unheated. There are also many other fascinating methods by which man has demonstrated his ability to draw maximum color, luster, clarity and brilliance from these gemstones.
