Fun Fact: Gemologists can often determine where a blue sapphire was mined just by examining its microscopic inclusions. For example, sapphires from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) often have silky rutile needles, while those from Madagascar may display unique color zoning. Burmese sapphires sometimes contain tiny reflective mineral platelets known as "fingerprints." These natural characteristics act like a sapphire’s birth certificate, revealing its geological history and adding to its mystique.

Buying a Sapphire: Sapphires are the ultimate colored gemstone—exceptionally durable (Mohs 9) and available in every color of the rainbow. When choosing a blue sapphire, select a shade that speaks to you, from periwinkle to royal or midnight blue, with velvety or sparkly finishes. MySapphireSource offers a vast selection of blue sapphires in various colors, sizes, and shapes, ensuring you’ll find one you love. Sapphires over 1 carat are significant, and no two are alike, making our jewelry truly one of a kind. Nearly all our sapphires are eye-clean and visually stunning. We also offer traditional Ceylon blue, rich royal blue, and vibrant yellow, orange, and pink sapphires, along with must-see rainbow sapphire jewelry—each stone hand-picked for quality.

About Sapphires: Kings once believed sapphires offered protection from harm and envy. Sapphires are thought to be calm and relaxing. Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) was the foremost source of fine sapphires until the incredible discovery of extraordinary stones in Kashmir in 1880. Unfortunately, the Kashmir supply was essentially exhausted by 1930, leaving Sri Lanka as the location of the world's most beautiful sapphires. Today sapphire mining takes place in Madagascar, Australia and Thailand, as well as other locations. Colors other than blue, pink and red are referred to as "rainbow sapphires" or "fancy sapphires". Red sapphires are known as rubies.

Sapphire Gifts: Sapphire jewelry is the traditional gift for the fifth and forty-fifth wedding anniversaries and sapphire is the birthstone for September. My Sapphire Source specializes in fine quality sapphires and offers an amazingly gorgeous selection of sapphire rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants.

Enhancements: Once mined, sapphires are expertly cut to maximize their beauty. Various techniques enhance their color, luster, and brilliance, with heat treatment being the most common. This permanent, industry-accepted process improves clarity and sometimes color. Less than 1% of jewelry-grade sapphires remain unheated, commanding a premium if their color and clarity are comparable. MySapphireSource offers a select few unheated sapphires for collectors, while most of our sapphires undergo standard heat treatment.

Care of Sapphires: Be sure to clean your sapphire jewelry regularly. With regular cleaning, your jewelry will look as good in 10 or 20 years as it does today. Dirt and grime can build up underneath the stones and around the setting, and using a small soft-bristled brush and lukewarm water is an easy method to keep your jewelry looking great. Since sapphires are tough and durable, they can withstand most cleaning methods. Steaming or ultrasonic cleaners can be used but we don't recommend these methods because they can cause stones to fall out by loosening the settings. Use common sense and don't use strong chemicals or boiling water to clean your sapphires.
